HAD High Availability Options?

I know you can deploy HAD in a cluster however I was curious if there are any other options for reducing or eliminating downtime for HAD? One scenario I would like to investigate is installing HAD on systems in different sites and then use load balancer to route requests. Prefer an active/passive configuration so when one is down or fails health checks, it routes requests to the other site.

My question is around how to keep the two systems in sync. Do I really have to stop the services to backup the current active node? If I could do a hot backup and restore them to my passive node that would be ideal.

Thoughts?
