We are living in a very dynamic world where big companies face fierce competitions from non-traditional rivals, or disrupters as we call them today. Just 2 years ago, who would have foreseen that the largest taxi company (Yellow Cab Cooperative) in San Francisco would file for bankruptcy due to competition from Uber, a startup that did not even own a single taxi?
Even traditional heavy-weight enterprises such as banks are not being spared. Have you ever heard of FinTech, a new term for agile technology startups that are disrupting the traditional financial transactions such as mobile payments, money transfer and loans ? What do these disrupters have in common? They are all software companies and most of them do not own any physical assets such as taxis or tellers.
If you think these disrupters are not in your industry, you would be in for a rude shock. Even in HDS, we are faced with the same challenges as our customers. That is why our focus is to lead the digital transformation or be irrelevant.
HDS may have the best storage arrays in the industry and superior technologies such as LPAR in our compute blades. However, these building blocks by themselves do not solve business challenges. The fastest array, most efficient server or most cost-effective network would not have helped Yellow Cab Co-op. If that is the case, then what would help?
As cliché as it may sound, businesses need an IT infrastructure that is agile, flexible and responsive to the changing market. Staying status quo is no longer an option today. Companies need to be more agile and respond to threats quickly. Like the boiling frog anecdote, organizations which are not reacting to the changes fast enough may soon find their business declining. Once this happens, the decline will continue at an alarming rate.
