At SAP TechEd this week in Barcelona it was all about analytics! From data, to insight, and then action. Analytics, along with Internet of Things, represent a foundation of Digital Transformation that is changing businesses, industries, and lives globally.
Fundamental to this transformation are ‘integrated systems’ which combine compute, storage, network and management in to a single infrastructure component that is quick and cost effective to deploy. A great example of this is the recently announced SAP BW Advance Mixed Load Benchmark (BW-AML Benchmark) where Hitachi now ranks first for the 4 billion initial record load (see Benchmark Results here).
It was only last July that we announced our leadership in the benchmark for 2 billion records loaded!
Now that’s what I call scaling!
So how can this be done, you ask. Well, at the heart of those SAP benchmark configurations is some sophisticated technology which is actually one of the standard features which sets Hitachi servers apart from the competition!
The record SAP benchmarks used Hitachi Compute Blade 500 systems running CB520X compute blades. These server blades are not only lightning fast – based on the latest Intel E7-8890 Xeon processors, and supporting the maximum amount of DDR4 memory that the Intel architecture allows – but they have a special trick up their sleeve. CB520X blades can be linked together with a simple front connector to scale from two to four, and ultimately up to eight E7 processors in a single system.
The new combined configuration becomes a true single system with increased processor, memory and IO resources. In fact, when 64GB DIMMs are used, a single system can address up to 12TB of memory!
Even if you don’t need one single system this powerful, all the resources of this new larger system are available to compose multiple smaller servers using Hitachi’s LPAR technology, which I blogged about earlier this year. This gives you unparalleled flexibility and resource optimization capability.
Yes, this week the software may be in the spotlight, but it’s the underlying infrastructure which enables the magic!
