How to Easily Manage the Oracle Infrastructure on UCP for Oracle and HDS Storage with Oracle Adapters (Part 2)

Blog Post created by Brian Donnahoo on Jun 10, 2015

In my first blog,  I described our portfolio of Oracle adapters Hitachi has developed to help customers simplify the management and protection of their Oracle environments, which drive down costs and allow solid integration with the Oracle infrastructure.   In my second blog, I gave more detail on the features and functionality of our Oracle adapters portfolio for ODC, RMAN and OVM.  In this third blog, I want to give more detail on our Oracle adapter portfolio including OEM, ASRU and Oracle WebCenter.

Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM)

The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle Enterprise Manager is designed for in-depth reports about different storage system components, mapping, configurations, usage, and performance summaries. Unlike other adapters, the Hitachi Adapter lets you monitor beyond the Oracle database object level to underlying Hitachi storage system objects. A comprehensive number of reports allow deeper understanding of your data and storage. Statistics are available, detailing usage and performance in a broad range of components.

Database Usage Reports can determine how much space is available over a large number of storage systems, including Hitachi NAS.

The Database to LUN Mapping Performance Statistics Report helps troubleshoot the causes of performance issues at a granular level.

Database File to Storage Mapping report shows the location of tablespaces and redo log groups for a given Oracle database, as well as the host devices for those mount points or ASM disks, invaluable for troubleshooting and analysis.

The capabilities of OEM can be seen below in Configuration Reports and Performance Reports with the use of a central dashboard to monitor HDS storage systems utilization.

Configuration Reports

  • View configuration and usage information for storage systems.
  • View configuration information for monitored LUNs in storage systems.
  • Replication Information report for replication information on LUNs monitored by OEM-managed hosts
  • View database usage in storage systems.
  • View mapping of Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) disks and disk groups to storage devices.
  • View mapping between storage devices to host with capacity and utilization information.
  • View mapping between database files and storage devices, as well as storage type information.
  • View storage system statistics.

Performance Reports

  • Database performance statistics.
  • LUN and port performance statistics.
  • LUN and port performance summary and trends
  • Capabilities to configure warning and critical thresholds from performance reports to generate alerts for taking preemptive corrective actions.

Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle Enterprise Manger is available for all Hitachi Enterprise Storage, Modular Storage, and Network Attached Storage 4000 Series Platforms.

The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle Enterprise Manager supports Red Hat Linux (RHEL) 6.3 64-bit version and AIX 7.1 TL02  64 bit version.

Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle ASM Storage Reclamation Utility (ASRU)

The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle ASM Storage Reclamation Utility (ASRU) enables the reclamation of storage capacity provisioned for Oracle Databases but is no longer in use.

The Oracle ASRU utility is used by a database administrator to identify and mark any allocated unused storage space, or disk blocks, in the Oracle database table spaces created on top of Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) as possible candidates for reclamation.  The Hitachi Storage Adapter for ASRU calls the ASRU script to mark the disk blocks for reclamation.  Once the ASRU script completes, the Hitachi Storage Adapter for ASRU calls the zero page reclamation function to release the free pages to the storage pool for possible reallocation to another application and/or host. This is made possible by the Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning (HDP) feature and is completely transparent and non-disruptive to the database and associated applications.

The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle ASRU is available for all Hitachi Enterprise and Modular Storage Platforms.

The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle ASRU supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 (x86_64) and IBM AIX 7.1 (64-bit).

Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle WebCenter

The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle WebCenter is an open platform that consolidates unstructured and structured content from a variety of web-ready formats so it can be centrally managed within Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) storage. Oracle Webcenter Management converts over 500 file formats to Web-ready formats such as HTML, XML, GIF and PDF, and delivers content via Web sites, desktops, really simple syndication (RSS) feeds, mobile devices, and Web services.

The Hitachi Adapter acts as the front end of the system and provides the user interface, while HCP handles storage issues such as retention for archival purposes and space reduction for backups.

The Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) also handles storage issues such as retention for archival purposes and reducing space for backups.

Using the Hitachi Storage Adapter for WebCenter a number of content management operations are possible including:

  • Adding New Content
  • Finding Existing Content
  • Updating Content
  • Revising Content
  • Deleting Content

The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle WebCenter Content is available for Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) 6.1.1 and HCP 7.0.1

The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle WebCenter supports Windows 2008 R2 and Red Hat Linux (RHEL) 6.3, 64-bit version.
