How do you ensure that you can be prepared to support customer expectations? This question is at the heart of the era of digital disruption. In this new business era, companies are leveraging technology platforms in order to quickly meet changing customer demands.  Therefore, the digital infrastructure is inextricably linked to business execution. To be competitive, businesses must be able to provide seamless access to the services that customers and partners depend on. Your infrastructure is not simply a back office function. Increasingly customers demand access to services on an on demand basis. These customers expect that they can access suppliers’ services as easily via a mobile device as they can through a browser. Without strong IT operations foundation, your company will be at risk. You need to be able to anticipate and fix problems before they impact the trust of your customers.

We are in a heterogeneous and hybrid world where businesses rely on disparate IT systems. Every element of an IT environment, from storage systems to networking and compute must work in concert with each other to ensure uninterrupted service. Even small IT disruptions can be costly from both a financial and reputational standpoint. Over the last several weeks we have had the opportunity to talk with the Hitachi Data Systems team that has created the Hitachi Live Insight for IT Operations (LIITO) solution. The impact of the offering is to enable organizations consistent visibility into their IT Operations. In addition to gaining visibility into the past, organizations must but must be able to predict future events to prevent disruptions.

The proactive approach to IT Operations that Hitachi emphasizes is in contrast to how many organizations operate today. Many IT Ops teams still fight fires as they happen without the visibility to anticipate failures. With the advent of advanced analytics, we are moving into an era where we can use the data from logs and sensors to understand what’s happening and what preventative actions should be taken to avoid disruptions.

In this blog, we discuss three reasons why it is important for organizations to adopt a real-time analytics solution.

Real-time analytics enables customers to find root cause faster than ever before. Both internal and customer-facing applications rely on high-level infrastructure service. One example is a private bank that has mobile and web applications for clients. It is a highly competitive market where clients expect excellent service. The bank experienced IT outages that caused one of their mobile applications to fail. If they had discovered the outage in minutes, customers would have never known about the problem, but unfortunately it went unnoticed for several hours. The bank has now implemented Hitachi’s LIITO offering. They have been able to reduce the time to investigate problems and through data models are able to predict disruptions.

IT Operations teams can help organizations meet business KPIs by delivering predictable levels of service. One example of a company that is meeting performance metrics by better understanding their IT operations data is an online sales platform that brings buyers and sellers of goods together. The company has a heterogeneous infrastructure and did not have a consistent way to monitor performance metrics. The company worked with Hitachi to implement the LIITO solution to gain real-time analytics and dashboards for their environment. They are now able to map the performance of their IT environment against business KPIs and provide reporting dashboards for both the IT ops team as well as business teams.

Many organizations with heterogeneous environments struggle to have a single pane view of their infrastructure. For example, a large e-commerce company with 5 data centers spread out across Europe, Asia and North America was concerned about controlling and managing their customer’s transactions in a secure and efficient way, however each data center was managed independently. The inability to view their environment caused issues, which included forcing the company to manually determine the cause of synchronization errors. The company implemented the LIITO solution to gain a single view of their data and to quickly respond to operations disruptions. Since implementing the solution, the company was able to reduce its IT Ops response time by over 80%. The reduction in response time has allowed the IT Ops team to focus on more strategic projects instead of fighting daily fires.

Taking action:

It is increasingly clear that organizations have to be able to ensure that their IT environment is managed so that KPIs are met. There are three key actions you should take to ensure that you meet customer expectations.

  • Create a strategy that matches your business and customer goals with the supporting IT infrastructure
  • Plan to implement a platform that can provide you with a consistent and predictable way to analyze your data center information
  • Take a holistic approach and plan so that you can bring all of your key hybrid IT infrastructure elements together to create a well managed and predictable measurement tool.
