No, not the for the Oscars. The all-flash storage system Product of the Year finalists for 2016 have been announced by TechTarget.  And we’re happy to see our own VSP F800 included and getting the recognition it deserves.

 

So let me say why the VSP F800 is one of the best all-flash arrays. It has a much higher performance ceiling and has enterprise-class features along with high reliability that sets it apart.  It’s been designed and built to be a foundation for the Datacenter Modernization initiatives that organizations are undertaking as they embark on their Digital Transformation journey.

 

At the heart of every VSP is Hitachi Accelerated Flash (HAF) which is the powerful combination of our custom designed Flash Modules (FMD) along with a flash optimized Storage Virtualization Operating System (SVOS). SVOS, with its flash-aware I/O stack, accelerates data access.  It answers to the demands for intelligent, high IOPS performance; predictable, sub-millisecond latency; and improved capacity efficiency rates. It can do this because it was engineered to accelerate the I/O path for access to every flash module.  Priority data handling intelligently prioritizes application I/O ahead of background flash activities to minimize latency. The result is improved I/O processing, higher multithreading support, and faster internal data movement. It also reduces response times considerably--by as much as 65%.

 

FMDs are intelligent flash devices engineered to help improve performance and efficiency by actively working with SVOS. They’re built to support concurrent, large I/O enterprise workloads. At their core is an advanced embedded multicore flash microprocessor that increases the performance of the NAND.  It works as a hardware offload engine that handles flash related tasks like wear leveling, block write avoidance, workload priority access and much more. Every time an FMD is added to a VSP F800, you’re adding more performance AND capacity.  It’s like scaling out an additional all-flash node.

 

The FMD microprocessor also features an “always on” inline compression offload engine. It uses a very-large-scale integration (VLSI) engine that enables lossless compression based on a derivative of the LZ77 sliding-window algorithm. The compression engine enables similar data reduction efficiency to the software compression algorithms found in other all flash arrays such as LZ4, LZ0, iGzip, zlib. The difference is that the FMD compression engine performs at 10 times the speed of other implementations because it is run directly on the FMD.

Our most recent SVOS 7 all-flash architecture comes with adaptive data reduction services, including deduplication and compression, which enables capacity and footprint savings of 80% or greater. These can be combined with our direct cloud connect functionality to transparently move file data to your choice of content repository or cloud service (Hitachi Content Platform, Amazon® Web Services, or Microsoft®Azure®). This capability enables unparalleled reduction in on-site storage costs and makes ongoing storage costs more predictable to plan for. All data reduction services are selectable and can be activated for specific workloads, giving you maximum control over efficiency and performance.

 

For metadata management, SVOS 7 leverages a hyperscale virtual a memory access (VMA) architecture. Designed for high throughput, it is a multistage memory structure that consists of four layers to store user data and metadata in distributed hierarchy. Data integrity is ensured with journal-logged and patented bitmap differential processing. Memory zones ensure metadata directories are pinned in DRAM while adaptive prefetching or de-staging algorithms increase metadata read hit rates; metadata is also offloaded onto FMD cache. This proven architecture enables more consistent throughput and lower latency even as capacity increases.  So year 5 performance will remain as high as it was on day 1 when the VSP F800 was fresh out of the box.

 

While performance is a given with the VSP F800, it can deliver up to 1.4M read IOPS, that isn’t the only reason customers’ select it.  Customers, who are moving from using all-flash arrays as an appliance to datacenter scale for their flash, are demanding the highest level of reliability they can acquire.  Hitachi is the only AFA vendor that guarantees 100% data availability because all the performance in the world isn’t any good when a system is down.

The VSP F800, along with the rest of the VSP models, is designed to be set up quickly and managed with ease using Hitachi Storage Advisor (HSA). Designed for IT generalists, HAS simplifies storage management by using a set of pre-defined and recommended configurations based on best practices.  This can dramatically reduce the time to complete provisioning tasks as well as any diagnostic operation.  For organizations that have their own management tool set, HSA includes standards-based application program interfaces (APIs) that enable administrative operations to be centralized on preferred management applications.
