With an unbelievably pleasant weather throughout the year, Bangalore was a green haven for decades. Corporatization of the city and rapid influx of the IT industry brought jobs and investments galore, but took a toll on the natural beauty the city was blessed with. While concrete jungles took birth, trees were felled at a pace that worried the old timers and tree lovers. This resulted in subtle changes in weather patterns and the depleting lakes in the Garden city of India.

tree-planting.jpgThis quarter, as part of the ongoing CSR activity, HDS Bangalore decided to make a change in the world and give back some greenery to Bangalore. Early morning on Nov 27, an enthusiastic group of 22 HDS employees headed towards Parappan Agrahara lake, a newly built lake by the Bangalore Municipal Corporation. After a short training session from the experts from the NGO Saytrees, we spent our morning at the site digging & planting over 55 Singapore Cherry saplings. The entire activity created great camaraderie amongst the team and we returned with the proud feeling of going back to nature (farming).3.jpg

Now, with a total of 482 trees around the lake, it will add to its biodiversity, enhancing the air quality of the area. We will be tracking the growth of these trees in the future.

Next step: We are planning to work with Saytrees in their Village plantation program.

This plantation drive will:

  • Add thousands of trees to a drought hit village.
  • Create sustainable income for farmers.
  • Spread environmental awareness among the younger generation and engage them to bring out solutions which will improve their future.
  • Reduce deforestation.
