Developing better listening skills seems to be a goal for a lot of people but how exactly do you learn to listen better? I recently read an article in the ASTD magazine Training and Development that described how to improve listening skills. According to the article there are three key attributes for active listening: show respect, keep quiet, and challenge assumptions. Next time you think your manager is just giving you a hard time by questioning your proposal, realize he or she is an active listener who is probably just challenging your assumptions. The article is worth the read if developing better listening skills is one of your goals.
