TBR’s Data Center Server and Storage Market Forecast indicates revenue growth in the global data center flash storage market will exceed all other server and storage sub-segments from 2014 to 2018, rising at a 22.9% CAGR to more than $13.5 billion while external data center disk storage revenues will shrink at a 5.3% CAGR to nearly $18.1 billion. For those who believe that only new-style AFAs can succeed in this market, it  would seem to have a dampening effect on the enterprise storage market. Gartner Critical Capabilities for General Purpose Disk Arrays Nov 2014

Gartner rated the VSP #1 in critical capabilities for the second time in two years. These critical capabilities are focused on five use cases or workloads: consolidation, virtualization, OLTP, analytics, and cloud. SPC 1 Results for VSP G1000 Feb 2015

Following this Gartner report, which was based on an analysis of product capabilities and customer references, the Storage Performance Council published the empirical results of their SPC-1 benchmark with the VSP G1000. This benchmark is designed to demonstrate the performance of a storage subsystem running the typical functions of business critical applications. Market Leadership in Flash  4Q2014

Hitachi views flash as just another capability of our enterprise array. It helps us achieve our industry leading results in critical workloads and performance benchmarks, and performance is the first reason customers look to flash in the first place. Despite the results of the SPC-1 comparison with all flash array vendors, you see very few analyst reports that rank Hitachi Data Systems as a leader in flash storage market. How can other AFAs be a leader in the flash market if that leadership does not translate into performance and workload leadership? We are even excluded from the Gartner Magic Quadrant for all Flash arrays since we do not limit our arrays just to flash. However, the acceptance of Hitachi flash storage in the market place has been great. In the last quarter of 2014 we shipped over 33 PB of flash storage, of which 2 PB were SSDs and 31 PB was from our Hitachi designed Flash Module Drive (FMD). We differentiate our FMDs from SSDs, since we designed them with special software running on quad core processors to increase enterprise storage performance, availability and capacity. In terms of volumes of flash capacity shipped, I would expect that 33 PB would rank us as one of the leaders if not number 1 in 4Q2014.




Storage Magazine User Satisfaction Survey April 2015

Aside from spec sheets, benchmarks, and what analysts think of our enterprise storage, what matters in the end is what our users, the ones who invested with us, have experienced our services and support, and have applied our product against their actual workloads, think of us. Recently the readers of Storage Magazine also ranked our Hitachi enterprise storage number 1 in overall quality. This ranking was based on a user satisfaction survey covering 5 general areas: sales force competence, initial product quality, product features, product reliability, and technical support. It included our family of enterprise arrays going back 5 generations to our USP, which goes back to 2004 (some vendors were evaluated only on their two most recent generations). Out of the 5 categories, Hitachi was ranked first for Sales Force Competence, Initial Product Quality, and Product Reliability. What is interesting is that we had the least number of respondents of all the 5 leading vendors and yet we gained first place. This must mean that our users were more satisfied across the board than the users of the other 4 vendors or users who had mixed environments had a preference for Hitachi Enterprise arrays.


No Matter How You Look at Enterprise Storage

So from every perspective; critical workload capabilities, independent benchmark performance, flash market leadership, and user satisfaction, the Hitachi Enterprise storage array is the clear leader.  While Hitachi Data Systems has established leadership in the enterprise market, we need to bring those qualities, capabilities, and support to the midrange and scale out market place.
