Surveys show that backup and restore remain at the top of the list of concerns for data centers. Each year as volumes increase, the struggle to meet SLAs and manage backup windows increases. Many enterprises with very large databases have come to rely on techniques such as simultaneously backing up data through multiple backup streams (multi-streaming) and backing up multiple sources to a single backup device (multiplexing). While these techniques can speed up backup dramatically, it makes it difficult to dedupe using traditional hashing techniques, which results in increased storage costs for backup.

Oracle DBAs, in particular, have struggled with the complexity of traditional disk based deduplication, finding it more costly to store on disk rather than tape despite the faster recover time of disk.  Many backup software products use Oracle RMAN to perform their backups. So in addition to the metadata that the software backup product inserts in the backup stream, RMAN also introduces its own metadata (time stamps and sequence numbers). As a result the backup stream for Oracle becomes very difficult to dedupe with the complexity of multi-streaming, multiplexing and the intermix of metadata from the backup software and from RMAN.

With the acquisition of Sepaton, Hitachi Data Systems, offers the only solution that can deduplicate multi-stream (up to 16 simultaneous streams), multiplexed data base backups without sacrificing deduplication ratios.  Sepaton offers the most efficient data base deduplication. It can find duplicate data in sub 8KB blocks with no impact on performance and capacity. It reports detailed deduplication ratios and storage utilization by client and backup job and is compatible with Symantec NetBackup, HP Data Protector, EMC Networker and IBM TSM.

Sepaton is a gateway that combines with high performance Hitachi storage arrays to provide industry leading backup performance of up to 80 TB/hr, which is 4 to 5 times faster than disk backup solutions from other leading storage vendors. Sepaton’s restore times are also twice as fast as inline designs and it scales to 4 PB of useable capacity (before deduplication) with its 8 node GRID architecture. Its unique support of performance enhancing multi-stream and multiplex data base backup techniques with no compromise in deduplication ratio’s or administration complexity, makes it the best business value for business recovery.
